The Crossroads of Europe and Asia.

I was born at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, in a small village in the Republic of Bashkortostan. The border between the two continents ran directly through my village, and the culture and traditions there were a mixture of Asian, European, and Islamic influences. At the time, this mixture seemed to me to be one big culture, and only many years later did I suddenly realize, that I always felt at home in different countries, because I always found something familiar there, a small piece of what I had already encountered in my own village. The village was like me a tree trunk, with many branches. This led me to understand that the world is diverse, but that diverse elements may combine to make a whole. Compared to North America, my village was located farther north than most Canadian cities. The winters were long and very dark.

The classic Route, almost 6,000 miles of track, takes in the southern tip of Lake Baikal and the charming Siberian cities of Ulan Ude and Irkutsk, and travels along the Chinese border. It is the longest railway in the world. There are branch lines to China through Mongolia and Manchuria, with service continuing to North Korea.

In the past it was the Silk Road, which connected East, South and Western Asia with the Mediterranean and European world.
